Actually, I personally think that the death scene was Shakespeare's get out clause to play to his audience . Having spent most of the play characterising Prince Hamlet os a softie (Oh that this too too solid flesh...etc. , To die, to sleep, ...etc.) he realizes that he needs a denouemrnt, Hence the death scene.
