Plant identification help?

i found a plant with small red berries and some unripe green ones.None were purple. it resembled a glossy buckthorn, but was only about 4 or 5 feet high and had a strong and overpowering smell. it smelled sweet, but it was so strong that it was bad. i live in northern minneapolis, minnesota. help please.
